Good to see film students being institutionalised, as ever. Less competition for the rest of us ;-)

Well, I'd think that there would be less morons, film school isn't a place people go to because they're told they need to go to college, it's a place to study filmmaking. But, I guess there will always be morons, wherever we go...

making films will make you a better film maker in the long run, no matter how you learn to do it.
it's pretty much universally recognised in the professional arena that most educational INSTITUTIONS do not fully equip a student for the real world. the NFTS may well be an exception, but then it jusy breeds elitist assholes who wonder why no one likes their arrogant self-assuming attitude when addressing others with the same lofty ambitions and ideals but in entirely different life circumstances.
i just don't want you to be disappointed when you end up as a runner at shepperton after your great foray into the film industry whilst in an INSTITUTION.
BTW, a friend of mine WAS a runner at shepperton when they did Gerry Anderson's Space Precinct -- he went on to edit the video for the star wars video board game (remember that!!) and now freelances as an Avid/Lightworks editor, pressing buttons to earn a living through his company Hot Lemonade.

A film course has to be right for the indivdual, some people will benefit others wont. I did a work experience on a media course whilst still at school. I saw the result of my work for the first time in years a few months back. It seriously stunk. I knew at the time we were leaving the shots too long and it would bore people. But it was worst- badly lined up shots, wobbly and tilting tripods, vrey poor shots, microphones in shots, not white balenced properly to name but a few. My work isn't brilliant now but it has come on a long way- to a standard good enough to show at small international festivals. Since that video I have had 2 years on a BTEC National Diploma in media, the first year of a TV and Radio degree- and worked on numerous projects of both mine and other peoples- including things for TV. I think both the education and the hands on experience alongside proffesionals really helped. Genny your course sounds a lot better than mine, but it wont gurantee a job, you are the only thing that can amke you suceed

i know a few people in the film industry and they told me that having a degree (or film skool diploma) can be a disadvantage, because the film crew have to strip u down of all the bad technique youve learnt then build you up...? THIS IS NOT A VIEW I AGREE WITH - but it makes me think i should skip Art Collage and go streight into Running
perhaps this is rather controversial- 'boy am i asking for it now!!!'

O COME ON!
Not only are your views on my college hopelessly misguided, I find your misconceptions about me rather startling. Have any of you been to film school? Any? No? So how can you slate it? If I cut it here, I will get a job.
Im 19. Im at a prestigous film school and Im learning more every day. I realise im in a great position and Im not gonna waste it. If Miker and Chance want to be hopelessly negative than fine. Time will tell. One things for sure. I wont be working in fucking IT and making films on the side.
I like to beleive people with drive and talent will make it. I've been a runner too ya know. Amazing your so quick to judge and none of you have even bothered to watch my stuff.
If mortus illumina is the best you can do, then im certain to go far.
